Tomorrow is the Fourth of July. Or, as I fondly refer to it, “Happy Birthday America” day.
Before you fire up the grill, crack open a beer or slather on some sunscreen, take a second to really think about independence and what it means in regards to our work life here in the United States.
When it comes down to it, we have a remarkable amount of freedom to pursue work we love. Work that fuels us. Work that makes a difference and impacts lives.
The government doesn’t assign our jobs. No one forced you to work at that accounting firm. Or to intern with a small startup. You choose.
I know, I know.
Your parents would disown you if you didn’t go to medical school.
And your school loans would go unpaid if you quit your job to pursue you true passion.
Not to mention, you wouldn’t be able to pick up that cute new Anthro dress.
Those excuses sound familiar?
Fine.
Just remember. Everything you do is a choice.
Your parents will come around. If they don’t, you can borrow mine for a while.
Those loans? I’m living proof that deferment won’t kill you.
As for that dress, another one will come along next season. And the season after that. Dreams are fleeting and meant to be chased now.
Yes, every choice has consequences. Just remember that in America we are free to make those choices – and that is something we should never take for granted.
